Stewarding our rangelands: Jameel Observatory at GLF Africa

Last week in Nairobi, rangelands and pastoralists were the focus of the ‘GLF Africa’ event. A team from the Observatory and partners contributed to several sessions.

Together with our partners Welthungerhilfe (WHH); International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI); Pastoralist Community Initiative and Development Assistance (PACIDA); Karamoja Herders of the Horn (KHH); Lotus Kenya Action for Development Organization (LOKADO); Action for Development (AFD); and the Resource Conflict Institute (RECONCILE), our ‘resilient rangelands’ pavilion showcased practical solutions for pastoralist futures.

As part of the pavilion program, the Observatory team co-organized three sessions on ‘Rethinking resilience and investment in drylands’ (Tahira Mohamed), ‘Shaping Kenya’s Camel Centre of Excellence for sustainable impact’ (Tahira Mohamed) and “How can we make anticipatory action work for pastoralists?’ (Samuel Derbyshire).

Tahira Mohamed was also a speaker in the pavilion session on ‘Making pastoralism work for sustainable and resilient food systems in rangelands

Together with the CLARE Programme, the IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development, and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Observatory (Peter Ballantyne) co-organized a session on ‘Drylands of tomorrow – Narratives and know-how from an abundant world‘.

Finally, Tahira Mohamed was a speaker in the GIZ-convened session on ‘Learning from pastoralism to foster resilience of food systems’ – see recording.
